Suruni - Ikuus (2014)

When a band chooses to dub itself, 'lo-fi experimental black metal,' you kind of figure two things. A) Its going to fucking suck, or, B) Its really going to fucking suck. Unfortunately, its even worse than that, folks.

Suruni is the solo effort of one, Sakari Piisti, from Jyväskylä, Finland and Ikuus is his debut for, Sun & Moon Records.

Essentially what this record offers up is a mishmash of random ideas, influences and incoherent song structures that operates using production values similar to that of Vidar Vaer's Ildjarn project. Also figure in an obnoxious drum machine, and you'll start to have an idea. Oddly none of the vocals are hellish shrieks, rather just spoken words in Finnish with the occasional painful sounding wail. Some songs are downright stupid though. Akana is one such example, which features a discordant harmonica in the forefront and a simple and sort of catchy riff in the background, while, Kirkkauden Virtaus has potential with its building post characteristics, but the horrible production and completely sloppy performance kills it in the end.

I guess the sad thing about this release is that there is potential, but the artist clearly just didn't give a fuck. Rather than attempting to record anything properly or even syncing the various instruments up right, the results are just a horrendous mess of acoustics, post-ish atmospheres and occasional black metal forays. I mean, you can here the mic making noises from being hit in some of the songs for fuck sake. And let me tell you that thirty eight minutes DOES NOT go by quickly either. No thanks.

I'm giving up on this review and moving onto something else. I don't even know what else to say. Look it up and scratch your head and wonder. How could a record be so bad that I couldn't even sit through the whole thing? Well, listen to Suruni and you'll understand. Fuck it.
